Need a hand with your Digital Marketing? From Yorkshire’s friendliest Digital Marketing Agency, with love x
Digital marketing Agency’s love blogs.
Why? Well your content strategy is a key part of your wider marketing strategy. Plus it’s exciting to telling stories, increase brand awareness, create content hubs, give people insights into your industry and team, and help people through sharing knowledge. Good blogs light up your social media content. And great blogs add fresh digital content to your website, increase traffic, and boost your SEO. What’s not to love?
Sometimes I daydream about writing with a feather ink pen, sipping wine and playing with words for hours. But blog writing isn’t always as sexy and glamorous as it sounds. In fact it never is 😬
Picture a big massive mess of research, words and ideas. Then organise and polish that big turd until it resembles something interesting, useful and fit-for-purpose.
It’s not easy. But we can make it easier.
Okay, before we start writing, we need to set some ground rules. Blogwriting for businesses isn’t like a personal holiday diary. You can’t just write about what you want to write about. Digital marketing content for businesses need to appeal to your audience or customers. The content needs to have a purpose. Whether it’s to boost your brand awareness, boost your website's SEO, or help sell one of your products or services, your blogs need to contribute to your overall marketing strategy.
So how can blogs pull their weight and bring results? Well, we need to outline why we are writing the blog, and who we are writing for. So if you haven’t already, read our Digital Marketing Guide: Write Better Business Blogs.
Now we can begin! 👇
1. Tone of Voice
Okay, let’s jump in at the deep end. Let’s get our brands Tone of Voice right. This is how your brand talks. Hopefully your brand will have a brand voice. But if not, we generally find that a friendly, helpful and conversational tone works well for most businesses we work with.
Imagine you're having a chat with a friend over coffee. Use "you" and "we" to create a sense of connection. After all, digital marketing is about building relationships, not just sharing information.
Once you have a nice brand voice, or tone, it’s time to keep it consistent. This means that your digital marketing, website copy, social media content, brochures and blogs should all sound the same. Just like your logo is the visual identity of your brand, your brand voice is the written identity.
Some brands embrace a bit of humor, others are all about the technical talk. As a general rule, the more you sound like your audience, the better.
Marketing Yorkshire Tip: Don’t write how you think a business should sound. Instead, write how you talk. This helps to be more conversational and approachable. Less like a stuffy business, more like people.
2. Choosing your keywords
And research them wisely! Try to select keywords and phrases with a high search volume but a low SEO difficulty. There are lots of platforms out there to help you analyse your keywords and give you ideas - ahref.com is a great one to start with, and they even give you a free 2 week trial!
Keywords are crucial for SEO, but stuffing your blog with them can do more harm than good. Instead, incorporate them naturally. For instance, as a marketing company in Yorkshire, we might mention how local businesses in and around Huddersfield can benefit from our amazing digital marketing strategies. Not that we are biased! 😬Read back this paragraph. The keywords for this blog are all in bold text. Identify what your keywords are, and weave them naturally into your writing. This helps search engines understand what your blog is about without compromising readability.
3. What should we write about?
As a digital marketing agency, we make content about anything and everything. You can turn pretty much any shred of an idea into a great blog. Hopefully last week's blog should have sparked a few ideas, but most importantly, write about the things that your audience cares about. You can use your websites keywords to help, too. If your audience searches Google for things like: websites, social media and digital marketing, write blogs about these topics.
If you’re still struggling, look at what content your audience is currently engaging with in your industry. Search Tik Tok for other businesses that sell similar products or services to you. Don’t copy content, instead, look for opportunities and knowledge gaps you can fill. Take a look at the comments on their posts, too. You’ll find lots of questions from people in your target audience. Choose a question, and answer it in a blog format!
Whatever you write about, remember why you are writing. And how is this going to support your wider digital marketing strategy? Your content should answer customer questions, share your knowledge, and add value. Don’t overcomplicate. Pick a niche and focussed topic, then choose your title.
4. Choosing a title
Many writers like to write the title last, but if you haven’t got years of writing under your belt, you’re often best to write the title first. This will help to keep us nice and focussed and on-topic.
Remember your keywords, and try to include as many of them into your title as possible (Making them sound natural!)
Your title is the first thing readers see, so make it count! A tech CEO once told me that she reads the first 6 words of digital content, and if it doesn’t grab her interest, she won’t read the rest. Sounds brutal, but her words stuck with me, and using her advice definitely helped my blog writing. People’s time is precious, so if digital marketing isn’t peaking interest or adding value fast, it’s wasting their time.
Practical Title
Think about what would make you click on a blog, and remember again why you are writing your blog. If you want to optimise your blog for best SEO performance, it’s best to go for a practical, functional title, that includes your keywords, like we’ve chosen for this blog.
"How to Write a Blog for a Business" is straightforward and to the point, promising practical advice. It isn’t quirky or creative, but it serves a function and people know exactly what they are getting. It’s also great for our website performance, so in this instance, it ticks all of our boxes.
Creative Title
Alternatively, a creative title not only grabs attention but also gives a glimpse of what to expect. Something like: ‘9 and a half reasons you’ll love our digital marketing agency.’ A more ambiguous and intriguing title like this can increase click-throughs, but be cautious not to click-bait your audience with totally unrelated content. People trust your brand, and you are building an online community, so make sure your content is worth their time.
So creative or practical titles? Well, it depends on the purpose of the blog, and the audience we are writing for. Remember your who and why, and if you’re still struggling, write as clearly as possible what the blog is about. You can’t go wrong with this approach.
5. Write your headings
It’s funny how we’re on point 5 of 10, and only now we are writing our headings. This shows how critical the planning phases are.
Once we’ve reached this point, it’s time to pen our headers. This helps us plan the key points first. It also keeps the content nice and structured. Then, all we’ll have to do is flesh out the points. Here are some Marketing Yorkshire tips on Headings:
As you’re researching and jotting down notes, start to organise your thoughts. A well-organized blog is easy to read and understand, so group together any thoughts that are closely related. These will become paragraphs.
You can easily reorganise your headings into the most natural order. If you’re a construction company sharing a project, think about the timeline. Start at the beginning, and work your way through the project. Ordering by time is a simple but effective way to keep your blog nicely structured.
Use headings, subheadings, and bullet points to break up text and highlight key points. This not only makes your blog visually appealing, but also helps readers quickly find the information they're looking for.
Be critical. As you’re writing and researching, you’ll probably find lots of exciting information, and spark lots of interesting ideas. But if any of your thoughts stray away from the title, don’t try to hand fist them into your blog. Copy and paste into an ‘Blog Ideas’ doc, and bank for future content.
6. Flesh out the headings
Go through each heading, and explain it. Keep things to-the-point, but don’t forget that personality goes far, too. Your readers are here for a reason—they probably want to learn something new. Make sure your blog delivers value, and is worth their time. Share insights, tips, facts, statistics, and actionable advice that they can implement right away. And try to make the writing fluid.
If you have a few paragraphs under one heading, use linking ideas to create a sense of unity as you transition from idea to idea. Each paragraph should be a collection of related ideas (or sentences), but the paragraphs should flow nicely from one idea to the next, too.
And once you’ve got your paragraphs nicely organised, think about the language you are using. Remember that business isn’t all business. It’s about people, too. And people love stories!
Sharing real-life experiences makes your digital content relatable and memorable.
Share day-to-day examples to illustrate your points. Things that might be mundane or everyday to you might be fascinating to your audience! We always think that personal touches go far, and showing the more human side of your business is always great for your brand and digital marketing.
So be concise yet tell stories 😬 There is definitely an art to it, but like anything, the more you do it, the better you get!
7. Edit and Proofread
Once you’ve got something that resembles a blog, it’s time to edit and proofread!
It’s easy to get distracted when we’re writing (we all do it!), but re-reading with fresh eyes and cutting out any sentences or paragraphs that don’t stay on topic is key. Sometimes it helps to ask someone else to proofread your digital content too. A second perspective is always helpful.
But no matter how many humans check you’re copy, we’re all human. That means that even the most eagle eyed proofreader can miss typos and grammatical errors from time to time. And whilst we’re all human, these oopsies can undermine your credibility a little, so take the time to double-check your content and ensure it's polished and professional. We also use handy Apps Like Grammarly to help double-check grammar. This can also be installed onto your emails and LinkedIn, too!
8. Add pictures
Choose high-quality pictures that relate to the content. Make sure to add an alt-text description to each image, that way you are telling Google what it is and will make it show on a Google image search higher.
9. Optimising your blog
Here at Marketing Yorkshire, we use lots of amazing optimisation tools and SEO review tool is a great one to start with. This tool is great for helping to optimise digital content and blogs. It’ll ensure that your blog is SEO optmised, will perform well on Google, and will help boost your website’s SEO, too.
Work through each section, like the Heading, Meta-Tags, Pictures, Titles and Ult-Text, and try to get your score as close to 100% optimised as possible. There is a fine line though - if something is 100% optimised, it sounds like a robot. We want a nice healthy balance of sounding on brand and human, as well as performing well online.
10. Include a Call to Action
Don't leave your readers hanging. Always include a call to action (CTA) at the end of your blog. Whether it's encouraging people to share the blog, leave a comment, or to get in touch, a CTA guides them on what to do next.
