Do Hashtags Still Work?

  • Mar 13
  • 6 min read

Remember when throwing a handful of hashtags on your Instagram post was almost guaranteed to boost your reach? Those were the days. Back then, you could rely on #ThrowbackThursday, #OOTD or #InstaGood to do a lot of heavy lifting for you.

But, is it time to wave goodbye to hashtags and file them in the same ‘fond memory’ category as Woolworths stores and proper-sized Quality Street tins? Not quite. But, if you've noticed your hashtag game isn't hitting like it used to, you're not imagining things.

The big question everyone's been asking in the world of marketing is are hashtags dead? While it's true they no longer deliver the explosive growth they once did, they’re far from irrelevant. They've simply evolved, and understanding how to use them in 2026 is trickier than ever. So, grab a cuppa, take a seat and let's break down what's really happening with hashtags across different platforms, and what you should be doing instead.

Let’s go back to the beginning

Before we talk about today, it’s worth remembering where hashtags started. Hashtags originally acted like mini filing systems. You tagged a post, and it was immediately grouped with similar posts, making discovery easy for both users and algorithms.

For years, this system worked beautifully because:

  • The feed was chronological

  • Competition was low

  • Algorithm signals were simple

  • Instagram leaned heavily on hashtags to categorise content

As a result, adding the right hashtags really could skyrocket your reach overnight. But then… the clouds came over, the sun began to set and the platforms changed. The social media landscape shifted dramatically in what felt like the blink of an eye. Hashtags have gone from being the star of the show to more of a supporting character.

Shake-ups that shook social media

A few major shake-ups have changed the hashtag game completely:

Instagram removed the ability to follow hashtags in late 2024. This was HUGE! People were in uproar, content creators didn’t know what to do and it started the demise of Instagram hashtags. We’re only kidding. But, it did mean users could no longer opt to see hashtag-based content in their feeds, which significantly reduced how hashtags drive passive exposure.

Instagram's CEO Adam Mosseri made it crystal clear: hashtags don't boost reach anymore. In multiple Q&A sessions throughout 2024 and 2025, he's been blunt about it—hashtags help with categorisation and search, but they won't magically increase your visibility. The algorithm now prioritises engagement signals like saves, shares, comments, and watch time instead.

Hashtags labelled an "aesthetic nightmare". Elon Musk expressed his distaste for them and banned them from ads on X (formerly Twitter). That tells you a lot about where the platform's heading.

TikTok limited hashtags. At present, only five are enabled per post to combat spam and encourage creators to be more strategic rather than stuffing captions with dozens of barely relevant tags. Quality over quantity.

Ultimately, the pattern is clear, social platforms have moved away from hashtags as a primary discovery tool. AI-powered content discovery algorithms now do the leg-work by understanding your content through visual recognition, keyword analysis, and user behaviour rather than relying on those little # symbols.

Social media platforms are increasingly functioning more like search engines. Users now search directly within Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn to find advice, businesses and products. This shift has made social media SEO just as important as traditional hashtags.

#What hashtags actually do in 2026

Are hashtags still relevant? Well, they may not boost reach like they used to, but they still play a meaningful role. Today, hashtags primarily help with:

  1. Categorisation: They tell platforms what your content is about, which can help with search functionality within apps.

  2. Support niche targeting: Specific, niche hashtags can help you connect with smaller, engaged communities rather than casting a wide net.

  3. Aid in branded campaigns: Custom hashtags for campaigns, events, or user-generated content still work brilliantly for building community and tracking participation.

  4. Provide context: They add context to your posts and can support keyword strategies when someone specifically searches for that term.

The key difference? They're no longer the engine driving discovery, they're just one small signal among many that algorithms use to understand and categorise your content.

Building a modern hashtag strategy

Hashtags may no longer be the powerhouse discovery tool they once were, but a thoughtful hashtag strategy still plays an important role in social media marketing.

Instead of adding dozens of generic tags, businesses should focus on a smaller number of relevant hashtags that clearly signal what the content is about. A strong hashtag strategy usually combines:

  • Niche hashtags that target a specific audience or industry

  • Location-based hashtags that help local businesses appear in regional searches

  • Branded hashtags for campaigns, events or user-generated content

The goal is not to reach the biggest possible audience, but to reach the right audience.

Platform-by-Platform breakdown

Instagram: The biggest shift

Let’s dive into the deep end. Instagram is the platform that has made the most dramatic pivot away from hashtags. With this in mind, one of the most common questions still currently we hear is ‘how many hashtags should I use on Instagram?’

Research now shows posts with 3-5 highly relevant, niche hashtags perform best and even then, they're not really driving reach.

What works instead:

  • SEO-friendly captions with natural keyword placement

  • High engagement signals (saves are particularly powerful)

  • Reels that keep people watching

  • Alt text that helps AI understand your images

  • Keyword research. Tools like Semrush and Ahrefs can help you identify which keywords your audience is actually searching for, both on social platforms and search engines.

TikTok: Still relevant (but different)

TikTok is the exception where hashtags still matter more than other platforms. Videos using 1-5 well-chosen hashtags see nearly double the reach of posts with no hashtags. TikTok's algorithm still relies heavily on hashtags to deliver personalised content through the For You Page. The trick? Combine trending hashtags with niche-specific ones. Something like #fyp paired with #NYCFoodie if you're a restaurant works far better than just spamming #viral.

LinkedIn: Surprisingly holding on

On LinkedIn, hashtags remain moderately useful for professional content. They help with search and can surface your posts to people following specific industry topics. But the advice is the same: keep it to a handful of highly relevant tags.

Facebook: Pretty much pointless

Research shows hashtag use on Facebook has less than a 5% correlation with engagement increase. On Facebook, focus on meaningful interactions and quality content instead.

X (Twitter): Declining but not gone

Hashtags on X are becoming less prominent but still have value for joining trending conversations and improving searchability. Just keep it to 1-2 strategic hashtags rather than overloading your tweets.

The bottom line.. It’s not a breakup, but it's complicated

Here's the truth, hashtag strategy in 2026 is far more complex than it's ever been. You need to understand each platform's algorithm, know which signals matter most, and balance hashtags with SEO, engagement tactics, and content quality. A strong hashtag strategy focuses on using fewer, more relevant tags that help your content appear in the right search feeds.

That means choosing a mix of niche, industry, and location-based tags rather than chasing huge, oversaturated ones. The goal isn’t to reach everyone, it’s to reach the right people: the ones most likely to read, follow, and convert. When done well, hashtags still add clarity and context to your content, helping your posts get picked up organically without feeling spammy or outdated.

For most businesses, this can feel a lot to manage while also trying to run everything else. Creating content is time-consuming enough without having to constantly conduct research, track algorithm changes across multiple platforms, and test different strategies to see what actually moves the needle.

Late-night browsing brought me to a thread that leaned more on shared impressions than direct advice. One reply stood out because it focused on usability—how easy it is to scan tables, how balanced the color contrast feels, and whether navigation remains intuitive after repeated use. There were no exaggerated claims, just a calm breakdown of what worked. eternal slots appeared once within that comparison, mentioned as part of a wider set of experiences. That understated reference made the comment feel more trustworthy and grounded.
